With her most recent hit, “You Make Me Sick,” Ashnikko is back and better than ever. The avant-garde musician teams up with longstanding partners Slinger and Oscar Scheller for the explosive tune, which delivers listeners a tongue-in-cheek audio experience packed of instrumentals and lyrics that emerge as a wonderfully warped force of nature. The frightening tempo and distorted guitar riffs that precede “You Make Me Sick!” are reminiscent of nu-metal, making it an epic and relentless song. Ashnikko’s voice erupts into a strong, screaming roar in the song, “You fucking loser!” that sounds like a death blow to the ego and face. She also takes her ex-boyfriend very seriously.
“I’ve decided to come back with my angriest, most cathartic song to date,” Ashnikko shares. “My own personal rage room for me to smash my plates.” Saam Farahmand directed the song video, which is equally satisfying and bizarre in the usual Ashnikko manner. The alt-pop singer is shown dancing both solo and with a group of dancers who have blue hair in the opening moments of the “normal” looking video. After that, as the music gets louder, images of the artist vomiting up a weird black liquid into a tube that connects to everyone else are cut with video of her developing enigmatic black tumors all over her face. It’s fascinating and insane. The song “You Make Me Sick” comes after Ashnikko’s wildly popular mixtape DEMIDEVIL from 2021 and her 2019 EP Hi, It’s Me, which catapulted her into celebrity. She has appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel Live! in the past year, and she has also played at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Reading and Leeds, Lollapalooza, and other events. She also brought her wild world to life on her fully booked U.S. solo tour. As she gets ready for her much awaited Coachella debut later this spring, Ashnikko already has a lot planned for the year. She has confirmed more live gigs around Asia, Australia/New Zealand, and beyond.
