With her newest track, “Suckin Up,” indie mainstay and rap pioneer Audrey Nuna makes a triumphant comeback, accompanied by an incredible music video.
Reverse scrubbing, record scratches, and pings of reverberating percussion combine to create a pleasing Y2K patchwork beat. Already infused with individuality, the well-chosen assortment of sounds establishes the foundation for Nuna’s exceptional vocal performance to come. She begins with a half-sung, half-spoken drawl, playing with the tension in some syllables with a contagious enthusiasm. Her own rhythmic route is added to the structure as she locks in with the beat. Nuna enters an otherworldly realm as electric piano chords reverberate beneath tumbling synth melodies as the chorus ends. Her voice digitizes the spectral noises as it pours with artistically powerful autotune. As “Suckin Up” progresses, the intricacy of each new segment gets higher. By the end of the song, the intentionally skeleton soundscape has given way to a mosaic of electronic tones and overlapping percussion.
Nuna’s artistic abilities are further enhanced by the amazing music video that goes along with the release of “Suckin Up.” She swings between flashing cheerful grins at the camera and shooting daggers with a sharp pose while sporting multicolored toothcaps. The locations follow her strategy, alternating between dramatic shots of Nuna in a futuristic show and rhythmic cityscapes.Nuna sings wearing an all-white costume while perched in a dazzling chair made out of every weapon known to man, complete with an umbrella and a French horn. It’s striking and reminiscent of a video game, and the slight contrast pictures go well with it.
Nuna is a singular artist who consistently creates music that transcends genres, and “Suckin Up” is just another example of her unwavering musical inventiveness.
