The first official project from the tandem known as Social Gravy is still going strong five years later. Social Gravy released ‘A Different Kind’, an EP, on September 4th of 2020. The record was strong in a variety of ways, with catchy but sophisticated songwriting demonstrating the sincerity that the band members carry with them on a regular basis. They were, and remain, focused on their upcoming project, and they’re giving a bit of a push to ‘A Different Kind’ in the meantime. The four songs on the EP each have a lot of character, but they also add up to a complete statement about the sound and the feeling. It’s a strong record overall, with timeless songs that still feel new.

The first track, “Happening Now” hits hard with its direct energy and overall confidence. The sound feels alive, as if Social Gravy is grabbing you by the collar and forcibly thrusting you into the present. The second song, “Love You Better” has a much gentler tone and a more lovestruck aura. The record has a couple of songs like this one: well-meaning and lyrically effective, but with a sonic warmth that really cements it in the mind of the listener as a time capsule. This is a simple sentiment, and part of what’s great about the Social Gravy is that they can serve the listener that kind of emotional refreshment without losing their cool. “Anywayz” is more of a chiller, a really cool, easygoing jam with a lot of bounce to it. The flow is lazy, but the whole thing is undeniably groovy. I can easily see this song being the kind you’d play on repeat when you’re in the mood for something chill but catchy.
The EP’s title track and closer, “A Different Kind” is heavy in the best way. It feels like the type of sound one might imagine after conjuring all the ideas that the record is putting forward; it’s a bold performance with a lot of heft to it that sticks with the listener. Five years on, Social Gravy’s ‘A Different Kind’ is a collection of honest and creative songs that show off just how effective the band can be at forming an emotional connection with their listeners. Fans of the band and their work should be excited about the upcoming EP, ‘The Pebble’, but even newer fans should know that Social Gravy has had a very strong base from the start.
