Rusty Reid returns with another carefully considered release from Lone Stardust (Masterworks of Texas Songwriters), his ambitious collection celebrating 19 songs connected to Texas songwriters. This time, Reid turns his attention to Johnny Nash’s timeless 1972 classic “I Can See Clearly Now,” approaching the song with an obvious respect for its history while still giving it enough of his own personality to make the performance feel fresh. Rather than dramatically reinventing such a familiar piece, Reid understands that some songs work because of their simplicity, optimism and natural sense of joy. His interpretation keeps that spirit intact, allowing the melody and uplifting message to remain at the centre while his distinctive vocal character and guitar work gradually make the recording his own.
The arrangement, shaped with Nashville musician Jed Demlow, stays close to the familiar feel of the original while giving Reid space to add his own musical fingerprints. Vocals, acoustic guitar and electric guitar provide the foundation, with Demlow contributing keyboards, bass, drums and percussion to create a lively backdrop. One of the most interesting moments arrives in the bridge, where Reid chooses a more stripped-back approach instead of attempting to reproduce every detail of Nash’s vocal performance. That decision gives the track a personal, human quality, particularly with Reid’s natural double-tracked vocal and the absence of Auto-Tune. As the song moves into the third verse and final stretch, his 1966 Gibson ES-330 adds another layer of character, bringing a gentle electric-guitar presence that firmly places the song within Reid’s own musical world.
“I Can See Clearly Now” also fits naturally into the larger concept behind Lone Stardust, where Reid explores the work of songwriters with a shared Texas connection while moving between familiar classics and lesser-known compositions.
